Our Affiliate

Habitat for Humanity Wellington County (HFHWC) is responsible for implementing the Habitat homebuilding program in Guelph and Wellington County. Together with other local agencies and organizations we are responding to a pressing need for more decent and affordable housing in our community.

Our affiliate was incorporated as a charitable organization in 2000 and since then we have built 14 homes: five in Guelph and nine elsewhere in the County. At present we are building an average of three homes per year and our goal is to increase to five homes per year by 2011.

The affiliate is governed by a volunteer board of directors and administered by a small paid staff with support from a series of volunteer standing committees that assist with identifying land suitable for our builds; selecting and supporting partner families; publicity and communications; planning and supervision of house construction; and fundraising.

In 2004, we opened a ReStore. Located adjacent to our administrative offices at 104 Speedvale Avenue East, Guelph, the ReStore sells new and recycled materials for home renovation and repair donated by manufacturers, retailers, institutions, and homeowners. The revenue generated by the store funds the staff and administrative costs of the affiliate so that all donations can go towards the purchase of land and the construction of homes.

As construction costs are so much lower in poor and developing countries, each home built in our community effectively funds another home overseas. To date HFHWC has given over $5000 and funded 6 homes.
