Family Selection Committee
Purpose:
The Family Selection Committee works to carry out the Board’s vision by defining the population in need of decent, affordable housing, and by developing processes and policies for selecting those in greatest need and recommending these families to the Board.
Members:
The size of the Family Selection committee will vary depending on the needs of the particular affiliate, but it should range between 5 and 12 members. The committee should have a Chair, a Board Liaison and members responsible for conducting home visits and reviewing applications.
Members should:
have good “social/people” skills
know the three selection criteria
understand how to read credit reports
be comfortable conducting home visits
know HFHC House Design Criteria and understand the principles the design criteria are based on
know what decisions families can and cannot make regarding house design and decorating options
be familiar with the work of the other committees, especially the Family Partnering and Site Selection committees
know the “lines of communication” between the family and the affiliate
know how to develop annual plans and budgets
develop a good understanding of the legal requirements that the committee must follow and be committed to implementing them.
The Committee will:
• develop outreach and marketing materials
• distribute applications and outreach materials throughout the community
• review applications
• notify ineligible applicants within 30 days of completed application
• assure adequate cross-cultural training
• conduct home visits
• assure that all potential families understand the application process, selection process and the three selection criteria
• assure the selection process follows the law and uses objective, legal and non-discriminatory selection criteria
• collect and review other supporting documents (i.e. credit reporting)
• communicate in a timely fashion with families regarding the status of their application
• provide information regarding other local housing resources and programs or other relevant training programs to families
• provide feedback to the Board regarding effectiveness of current policies and procedures
• adequately train new committee members and home visitors
• communicate effectively with the other committees and the Board
